overhead

we went to a lake
and saw in the trees:

surrounding a house,
a committee of vultures.

for a moment, flying, a kettle.
we wondered when the wake.

if you were to paint
a portrait of vulture,

the background purple
the height a person’s

i’d hang it in a house.
surrounding a house,

a committee of vultures.
we know scavengers

gather to death
and this wait

this pause for a breath
we take as a sign.
